There is 2 sections of the pond that are experiencing erosion control due to the westerly winds the pushes waves against south shore along the eastern edge. The first section is from the outfall between Braden & Barners properties to the outfall between Wright & Smith properties. The section section is from the outfall between Wright & Smith properties to the west corner of the Dofflemyer & Sill property.
During construction, the pond level would need to be lowered between 1 and 2 feet. Digging would have to be done along the shore to level the bench and straighten the eroded shoreline bank. Soil removed could be used for backfill.
Another problem is staging the blocks or rock for installation.
It has been very difficult getting quotes for erosion control for the pond.
Estimates -
1. $20,000 to put 4" to 4' rocks along the shore. This estimate doesn't include the cost to fix the walkway and grass torn up during rock placement. This would take around 550 cubic yards, 55 dump truck loads. The larger rocks would be put in the pond with the smaller used as backfill up the bank. These rocks would be similar to the riprap at the east end of the pond.
2. Unknown cost - Install solid concrete barrier blocks. The material cost would be around $30 each for 4'x2'x2', totally approx. $6,000 for blocks and transportation. Then there would be the cost to offload the blocks, dig the bench & shoreline bank, install the blocks, backfill and cleanup the site.
Vegetation on existing RipRap at east end of pond.
One of the landscape companies suggested installing vegetation on the riprap.
1. Install grass at around 1,000 square feet and would take around 10 cubic yards of soil ($750). This would require a lot of manpower to accomplish.
2. Install 2'-4' tall native grass between between the rocks. Cost is around $2-5 each and could start with 100, then add more as needed. Native grasses - Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum), Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii), Pink Muhly (Muhlenbergia capillaris), Fountain Grass (Pennisetum alopecuroides), etc.
